Total Car Check at a glance
Total Car Check is an online vehicle history service with an initial free lookup and paid Silver and Gold reports. You begin with a registration number, then choose how much information you need. Its range makes most sense when you treat the initial lookup as a starting point and check the paid package details against your questions about the car.
This review draws on the provider’s published information and sample report. We have not purchased a report or tested its accuracy against a vehicle.
How the service works
Enter the registration on the Total Car Check website. For a paid check, the provider says it emails the report and makes it available to view and download from your online account. That gives you a record to revisit while speaking with the seller or checking the paperwork.
Silver, Gold and checking several cars
The homepage describes Silver as covering police stolen markers, insurance write-off status, registration changes, salvage records and keeper-duration information. Gold adds important depth: the official sample explicitly identifies finance information, valuation and the ex-taxi search as Gold-only sections. If finance is one of your questions, do not assume the entry-level package answers it.
On 8 October 2026, the pricing page showed one Gold check at £9.99, three for £14.99 or five for £19.99. Buying several checks can make sense while looking at several cars, provided you expect to use them. Check the applicable voucher expiry before purchasing; the service terms describe validity periods of one or two years.
What is useful about the report?
The Gold sample puts an overall alert above the detail, then separates finance, vehicle identity, keeper history, mileage and MOT information. It illustrates a finance agreement, a write-off and a mileage discrepancy, making it useful for understanding how a concern might be presented. Those are example records, not findings about a car you are buying.
Salvage history is worth understanding separately from a write-off marker. The provider’s glossary explains that this checks auction records and that a salvage vehicle may not also appear as an insurance write-off. The distinction gives you another question to put to the seller. Its valuation figures are also described as guidelines based on an assumed mileage, so use them as context when discussing price.
Limits to understand before buying
The service terms describe the report as a snapshot of available third-party data, with possible reporting delays. A reassuring result should therefore sit alongside identity, paperwork and condition checks. Coverage is for UK-registered vehicles, excluding Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
Read the guarantee documents before relying on the advertised £30,000 headline. Total Car Check and the Experian finance check have separate terms; cover has eligibility requirements and limits, rather than applying to every possible issue with a car.
Our take
Based on the published offering, Total Car Check is a practical option for a buyer who wants an initial lookup followed by a fuller report, or expects to investigate several vehicles. The useful next step is to open the sample, decide whether Gold’s extra sections answer your questions, and confirm the current package before ordering.
