Understanding the package structure
Instant Car Check is a UK registration-based service with a choice of report products. The homepage distinguishes the information included in all checks from optional additions. Recorded write-off and stolen status, keeper information and import/export markers are listed as standard, while finance and mileage searches are labelled optional. Valuation is identified as unavailable in the Basic check.
This makes the package-selection step particularly important. Write down what you need to establish before opening the order screen, then check each item against the basket. The cheapest advertised starting point does not, by itself, describe the scope of the report you would want before committing to a purchase.
What the public sample explains
The sample report sets out vehicle description, identity and history information in separate sections. Its VIN explanation is useful: the service can accept a chassis number as well as the registration and check whether the details correspond. The sample specifically encourages the buyer to add the VIN rather than relying on a number plate alone.
It also explains that the previous-keeper count excludes the current keeper and dealers. This helps avoid misreading a number in an advert as a complete list of everyone who has handled the vehicle. Read labels and definitions alongside the result, especially when the seller uses the word owner differently from a report’s keeper terminology.
Keeping the result useful at a viewing
The provider offers online and print-friendly reports. Its update page accepts a registration and report reference for checks completed within the previous 30 days. Follow the instructions shown there and establish what an update actually covers; simply retaining an old report is not the same as obtaining new information.
Our practical suggestion is to save the reference, inspect the physical VIN at the viewing and compare it with the paperwork before proceeding. Make a note of any result that needs explanation so that the conversation with the seller is specific. A report is easier to act on when it produces a short list of questions instead of a quick glance at a headline status.
Limits and our editorial view
Instant Car Check’s terms describe information assembled from third-party sources and require customers to provide complete, accurate details. They also explain that the report is intended to inform the buying decision. Read those conditions and any current product-specific wording before paying, particularly if your decision depends on a particular field being present.
A missing entry is not a substitute for service paperwork, evidence of repairs or an inspection. The report cannot tell you how a clutch feels or establish the quality of a repair simply by searching records. Our view is that the public sample makes the identity-checking process understandable, but buyers must pay attention to optional coverage. This is an assessment of the published service and sample, not an account of a purchased report or tested customer support.
