HPI Check, explained

HPI Check is a UK vehicle history service for buyers investigating a used car before committing to it. The paid report combines records about its identity, financial background and recorded history. In our assessment, its purpose is to identify questions to resolve with the seller.

How the service works

Start by entering the registration number on HPI’s website. After obtaining the report, add the chassis number (VIN) and V5C logbook details as required for the guarantee. The site also provides routes to redeem a multicheck and update an existing check. Confirm the package and current price on HPI’s site; a headline “from” price should not be read as the price of every report.

What the checks cover

HPI’s published product information lists outstanding finance, recorded theft, insurance write-offs, scrapping, keeper counts, plate changes and import/export status. Logbook checking helps examine the paperwork, while mileage discrepancy checks depend on the records available. These are different questions: an ownership-related alert and a mileage concern call for different follow-up.

What is useful about the report?

The official sample report starts with a summary of alerts, then opens into explanations and supporting details. Its finance example includes lender and agreement information, illustrating how a report can support a follow-up enquiry. Mileage, MOT history and vehicle specifications have their own sections, so the report can also help you prepare questions for a viewing.

Our reading of that structure is that its value lies in giving an alert context. A warning is a starting point for investigation, not an instruction to guess what happened. The sample is an illustration with historic example data; it is not evidence of the records that will exist for your car.

Understand the limits and guarantee

HPI’s published terms offer up to £30,000 for qualifying losses involving failure to acquire good title. The separate write-off-related reduction-in-value limit is the lower of £15,000 or 50% of market value. This is conditional cover, not an automatic payment or a warranty of the car’s condition.

Requirements include completing the check and supplying the requested VIN and V5C information before purchase, checking the vehicle against its paperwork and retaining a signed purchase receipt. The terms exclude Basic Checks from the guarantee, and exclude mileage, valuation and descriptive information from its cover. Mainland Britain restrictions apply; overseas history before first registration there is outside the stated coverage. Read the full current terms for eligibility, exclusions and the two-year claim period.

Who might find it useful?

Our editorial assessment is that HPI is worth exploring for a buyer who wants a detailed record check and is prepared to work through the alerts and paperwork requirements. Its sample encourages physical identity checks, servicing checks and consideration of a mechanical inspection. That is a sensible way to use a history report alongside a viewing.

Our takeaway

Explore HPI for the questions its report helps you ask. Read the sample first, confirm the package, and investigate unresolved alerts before proceeding. This profile reviews published material; we have not purchased or tested a report.
